A Rose is a Rose is a Rose... or is it?

I love roses. In fact, they are my favorite flower. One of the highlights of my life is going to the Missouri Botanical Gardens and hanging out in the rose gardens smelling the many varieties to my hearts content. My children are pretty tolerant of my obsession and are so kind to comply with my requests to "oh, smell this one, " and "Wait, THIS one is fabulous". The many fragrances of the amazing rose are mind boggling... Some are lemony some sweet, some are soft and subltle, others almost overpowering (not for me) but I'm sure for some people (and that's okay).

So why am I pondering roses in the dead of winter? Well, besides longing for spring, I just finished a wonderful book called The Rose of Winslow Street, by Elizabeth Camden and the theme of the Rose pervades throughout the story as heroine Libby Sawyer shares her journey from shy and retiring shrinking violet to a rose in full bloom.

Ms.Camden weaves a tale of intrigue and suspense combined with colorful, often humorous and well developed characters that keep you unsure of the outcome until the very end.

I used to be a bit embarrassed to admit that my favorite flower was the rose. It seemed a bit common, not at all quirky or unique. But the longer I ponder the rose the more individual each one appears. So I'm thinking that maybe we are all roses in the eyes of the Lord. All of us exhibit the creativity of the master gardener who in his grace and lovingkindness forms each one. Reflecting His image. His fragrance. His beauty. I love fiction that takes me back to the rose garden.

For many years, Lynn Austin nurtured a desire to write but frequent travels and the demands of her growing family postponed her career. When her husband's work took Lynn to Bogota, Colombia, for two years, she used the B.A. she'd earned at Southern Connecticut State University to become a teacher. After returning to the U.S., the Austins moved to Anderson, Indiana, Thunder Bay, Ontario, and later to Winnipeg, Manitoba.

It was during the long Canadian winters at home with her children that Lynn made progress on her dream to write, carving out a few hours of writing time each day while her children napped. Lynn credits her early experience of learning to write amid the chaos of family life for her ability to be a productive writer while making sure her family remains her top priority.

She and her son traveled to Israel during the summer of 1989 to take part in an archaeological dig at the ancient city of Timnah. Lynn resigned from teaching to write full-time in 1992. Since then she has published twelve novels. Five of her historical novels have won Christy Awards in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, and 2009 for excellence in Christian Fiction. And two of her inspirational fiction books were chosen by Library Journal for their top picks in 2003, and 2005. One of Lynn's novels has been made into a movie for the Hallmark Channel, starring actress Shirley Jones. Ms Jones received a 2006 Emmy Award nomination for her portrayal of Aunt Batty in the film.

Your opinion matters. It really does. I love hearing from readers about what worked for them in a story and about what doesn’t work. Reader feedback changed the balance between romance and suspense in my novels. After the Rock Harbor trilogy, I wanted to write more suspense in my novels because that’s what I personally like. But readers really wanted more relationship and romance in the books so I moved back that direction to about the same mix of 50/50 that the Rock Harbor novels contained. I write for you even more than for myself.

I had no intention of setting a whole series of books at Bluebird, Texas. It was going to be only one book, but readers sent me requests in droves for more books. The fourth book in the Lonestar series, Lonestar Angel, will be out in October. The Rock Harbor novels were going to be complete at three. There are now five and I’m thinking about another one! All due to reader demand.

I’ve often asked for reader input on names and locations too. When I was struggling for a name for my hero in The Lightkeeper’s Ball, I turned to my readers. Harrison really fit my character, and my readers told me. Love that! When I was trying to decide on a location for the new Hope Beach series I’ve started, I asked readers. Their overwhelming response was for a series set in the Outer Banks so guess what I’m writing?!

Some thoughts from me!
I must confess; I can't wait to read this book!
I will be traveling to Boston tomorrow morning to visit my family. My Uncle George's life seems to be coming to an end here on earth, and I am so blessed to be able to fly out to say good-bye, or as my Grandmother used to say- so long.

In a way that's what reading does for me; it takes me on a journey, making friends along the way, and then bidding a fond farewell- until we meet again.

I will keep you in my heart as I read The Sweetest Thing. I have a feeling that, as so often happens while reading, this will be the right book at the right time.

More Hope!

Don't you love that feeling that happens when you read the last page of a book, close it up, and sigh, still remaining for a moment in the cloud of that in place between the world of the story and real life? (This is usually where my family looks at me cross-eyed.)

Well, I just finished Hope Rekindled by Tracie Peterson and "it" happened. What is a mystery to me, is that I didn't totally looove the book or bond with any one character. In fact, the closest I came to a kindred spirit was Euphanel, the MOTHER of the heroine. (Gasp.)

The story takes place in Texas, in 1887, in a tiny mill town. The time frame encompasses the "after the war" growing pains, and the soul of the nation is up for grabs. Laws can be changed but hearts are not always willing. Men take the law into their own hands by establishing yet another blight upon our country's conscience, creating organizations such as the one in Tracie's novel called The White Hand of God, a negro hating group which really only served their thirst for spilling blood and lust for power- even the name makes me cringe. They play a part in the suffering of the little town, but the real villain is a man named Stuart Albright, a man who could be caricatured as a Snidely Whiplash type, but really has an evil streak just because he is a cruel person, and he likes it that way.

I have actually encountered that kind of person in real life. (My husband served in the Missouri Legislature for twelve years...)

Snidely, I mean Stuart, will stop at nothing to financially ruin the Vandermark family and destroy the town. If the laws he twists seem improbable, I assure you, they were real. My husband, David, changed the fifty/fifty per cent ownership law in Missouri when he was in the legislature, (which made some people angry)- so Tracie wasn't making this stuff up.

The Vandermarks refuse to give up and continue to trust in God in spite of the turbulent times.

So in the end you could say that... Hope floats.

You can tell from the cover of Darkness Follows by Mike Dellosso that it's going to be dark and scary. And it is.

This is a psychological, paranormal, and horror book all rolled into one. Kind of an "It's a Wonderful Life" on acid.

Sam Travis is the brain injured husband of Molly, and father of six year old Eva. He is suffering from hallucinations, where a portal of evil connects the past and has a very real demonic power in the present.

So what does a character from the Civil War have in common with Sam and why is he being contacted by this person's journal entries- posted in Sam's own writing? Who is the maniacal killer? (Even HE doesn't know.)

For some reason this book was hard for me to handle: murder, mental illness, animal torture, and a recovering Democrat political candidate... I really wanted Molly, the mom, to take little Eva seriously when she said that she had a shimmery friend named Jacob, who wanted them to pray for Daddy.

I think the book would have had more power if somebody actually said a prayer out loud. When much evil is shown, much good is required to fight it. So rather than just a "yes honey, I'm praying for Daddy", I wanted it to happen.

Mike Dellosso is a really good writer. His forward and afterwards helped me get to know him a bit and I liked him.

The Reluctant Detective by Martha Ockley

Move over Miss Marple; the Reverend Faith Morgan has joined the ranks of the next big, hot, new... clerical detective! A clerical detective is, according to Philip Grosset, "Any detective with a significant church or religious back ground." Check out his web site at http:detecs.org. It's really fun!

Martha Ockley has taken this genre by storm (or at least a good English rainfall).

Faith, a former policewoman, now a priest in the Church of England, becomes involved in the investigation of the murder of a fellow priest- the same priest who was about to retire from his parish in the village of Little Worthy and whose place Faith is being considered as the replacement vicar. Complications arise when her ex boyfriend, Ben Shorter is the chief inspector on the case.

Faith's epiphany of, well, faith was a factor in her break up with Ben, whose style of police work values convictions (guilty ones) over, perhaps, convictions of a more heavenly kind.

I really liked Faith's character. Whereas Ben focuses on being right, Faith is challenged to seek the truth. She wears a clerical "dog collar" as part of her new found vocation. Ben carries a badge. Both are symbolic of stands taken and sacrifices made. Faith is not above being tempted by Ben's magnetism (and who wouldn't be?). Her new found purpose as shepherd of this winsome flock of regular people and the comfort of the unwavering doctrine of the cross is strong; but she wonders: is it strong enough to handle all this?

This book was a delightful discovery and I look forward to more Faith Morgan Mysteries.

The Reluctant Detective sees Faith Morgan arriving back in the region of her birth - Winchester in Hampshire. Recently ordained, she had been working as a curate in an Anglican inner-city church. Inspector Ben Shorter starts by sneeringly telling his sergeant, "Ms Morgan is a vicar. One of the ordained," Ben emphasized the word. “She's a card-carrying professional at the touchy-feely stuff.” But he soon starts to feel differently about her again, although she is well aware that he "didn't understand the reality she experienced through her faith. He didn't even recognize its existence. That was the gulf between them." Her own beliefs and doubts are convincingly described, for even she can't help wondering, "What if there is no truth to it?" But for her, as for Pascal before her, it was a gamble worth taking.

An Unlikely Suitor by Nancy Moser

It's summer in the city. New York City, 1895, and it's hot- and when the going gets hot, the wealthy go... to the sea side. For the mega wealthy society crowd, that would be Newport Rhode Island. Trust me- you haven't seen nouveau until you've seen the riche of this set.

Nancy Moser takes you there by rail and by steam ship, first class or not- depending on who your friends are. But I am getting ahead of myself. Mrs. Scarpelli and her daughters, the perfectly responsible Lucy (24) and the almost sixteen not so responsible Sophia work in a Manhattan sweat shop in the garment district. One evening they receive notice that they must find a new apartment, as their over crowded tenement is scheduled to be torn down to make way for a new park. And so the story begins.

I have always loved books about women who sew and the Scarpelli's have talent to spare (except in these economic times they must use all of their skills to put food on the table and a roof over their heads). Mama makes hats, Lucy is a natural with design, and Sophia, although extremely spoiled and headstrong, is fast learning her way around a sewing machine. I found her love of dime novels endearing, which saved me from getting too annoyed with her petulant character.

An Unlikely Suitor is replete with uncomfortable but fascinating Victorian fashion, jealousy, suitors (unlikely ones), disapproving matrons and danger due to an evil villain named Bonwitter.

I really enjoyed leaving the heat of the City, along with the Scarpelli's, and could almost feel the sea breeze on my face as they explored the cliffs of Newport. How wonderful to discover that, in spite of some of life's pin pricks, dreams just may come true.

Ms. Moser's love of story, sewing, architecture and historical accuracy sparkles like the sunrise over the Atlantic.

The Judgement by Beverly Lewis

If you think that Amish Fiction is ONLY about bonnets, delicious food, and barn raisings, think again. Beverly Lewis, the "founder of the Amish genre", crafts a story about faith and family values, set on a collision course that rivals the challenges of the "modern" world.

The Judgement is the second book in The Rose Trilogy. It stands well enough on its own, but I can't imagine anyone not continuing on to (at least) book three.

The fragility of life and love is explored with honesty as the Kauffman family battle their mother's crippling illness, a daughter's separation from her Englisher husband, and another's struggle to find true love.

Through Ms. Lewis' writing, it becomes crystal clear that the so called "simple life" isn't always so simple. Children, even Amish children, go against the wishes and wisdom of their parents and suffer the consequences; something that as a parent of five teen- agers and twenty somethings- I can relate to. (I found myself praying right along with the characters- head bowed and eyes closed.)

What I love about the Amish is their emphasis on doing the right (biblical) thing. They do their best to live the truths of the Good Book. Sometimes they mess up...

This book is one more reason why Beverly Lewis has taken the world by storm.

Abigail's New Hope by Mary Ellis

Abigail's New Hope is Book One in Mary Ellis' The Wayne County Series.

Abby is a lay midwife, one who is trained through experience, delivering babies along side a certified nurse midwife or doctor who does home birth deliveries. This subject is near and dear to my heart because all five of my own children were delivered by certified nurse midwives at home. I know from personal experience how things can get complicated, like being surprised by twins... I also know what a political hot potato midwifery can be...

So, when things go wrong and a woman dies in childbirth, Abby ends up in jail for practicing midwifery without a license and for possessing and administering a drug that she gave as a last resort to try to save the mother's life.

But this book is really about some incredibly interesting characters, people to whom I bonded with surprising ease. Catherine, Abby's sister who comes to help Daniel (Abby's husband) care for their two children. Isaiah, Daniel's sexy deaf cousin who lives in a lovely renovated shack on the property... who knew?? Nathan, the grieving widower- trust me, you won't want to miss his "group therapy" session. Just to name a few...

Mary Ellis makes you forget that "Amish" is a genre, and just wraps you up in relationships and surprises, hopes and tears (good ones). I was impressed.

Here's something a bit out of the ordinary for me- a devotional review! Eddie Jones and Cindy Sproles are collaborators in this devotional for (primarily) married couples, although I think that the journal style entries could be enjoyed by just about anyone in or out of a relationship. Eddie Jones shares about his life as a husband (truthful, but humorous) and Cindy Sproles gives her point of view as a wife and mother- not holding back her feelings of joy, desire, and sometimes frustration and disappointment.

It was refreshing to read about real people in real relationships forging ahead to get to the greater good. To finish the race, in a time in history where the lines that define marriage, family, love and faith can get blurry and confusing. They choose to stay in the race in order to receive the prize, a marriage and family that stands the test of time. Giving up, they seem to say, doesn't make the hard times go away... So keep at it, the sun will come out eventually, but most of all, know that you are not alone.

Tea for Two by Trish Perry

At first glance, I wasn't sure that my attention was going to be engaged by this book. Tea for Two is a romance novel. Pretty straight forward. Counselor girl meets single dad of two difficult teenagers. I have four teenagers, and I know how difficult it can be. Sometimes I feel like our family is on a roller coaster, but in different sections; when one is up, someone else is down and someone else is holding their hands up in the air (never me). So, Tea for Two almost felt like it should have been called Tea for Four because the problem children were very important characters, effectively nudging out a cozy twosome. Not a big deal.

Millicent's Tea Shop and the town of Middleburg Virginia were prominent "character locations", but I'm not really sure that I felt the town of Middleburg- I didn't truly get that sense of being there that I look for when place is featured in a novel. Especially if the author is going to write more books based on that particular place. Although I did find myself craving tea and shortbread.

The characters felt real and I would like to compliment Trish Perry on her observant eye and listening ear. I believed the somewhat everyday nature of the characters' plight- how to handle teenage rebellion, how to balance work, stress and relationships and I appreciated the heroine being a therapist who really knew her stuff. Kind of a story AND therapy session together... ingenious! I'm serious- by the end of the book, I wanted to make an appointment with Tina Milano too.

I liked the Christian themes of healthy nonjudgmental fellowship, acceptance and that prodigals are always welcome home. Isn't that how it should be?

If you like Debbie Macumber's books (I do) then I think you will enjoy Trish Perry's Tea for Two.

By the time I was able to write Tina and Zack's story, I was eager to unfold their lives, conflicts, and love. I hope readers will be eager to experience what happens to them!

No doubt about it, C.J. Darlington is a rising star in today's Christian fiction. C.J.'s new book- Bound by Guilt made me want to read more by this very talented young author.

Bound by Guilt takes you on a theme park worthy ride- if you could- just imagine a theme park based on the world of antiquarian books, coffee shops, horses, rescued dogs, broken relationships and (praise God) second chances.

Roxy Gold is a sixteen year old con artist; she's not bad; she just crash landed into a gig stealing rare books with her guardian, Irene and Irene's son, Diego. Roxy's desire for a mother's love has helped launch her into this life of crime, which is solidified by her friendship with Diego, her only friend. When things go wrong during a burglary and someone is killed, Roxy goes on the run.

C.J. writes with great wisdom and a snappy contemporary style. So not only does she grab you with a great story, but she digs deeper with a message that seems to say that everyone needs rescuing, and someone to believe in us. Also that you don't have to be perfect to reach out and love someone. God uses imperfect vessels, something that I find comforting!

I found this book convicting. Guilt has (at times) ruled and reigned in my life; and had it not been for the Lord on my side, as the Psalmist writes, where would I be? I pray that I will, like Jan, who befriends Roxy, also have a chance to make a difference in the lives of hurting children.

Suspense novels often involve painful subjects. In the case of Terri Blackstock's, Vicious Cycle (a follow up to Intervention), it's addiction and human trafficking. Stuff I don't normally want to ponder.

In Vicious Cycle, we find Barbara Covington and her children Emily (who is about to graduate from a year long Christian rehab center) and Lance (precocious cool guy with a learner's permit) about to embark on yet another unintentional adventure. One that most of us would do anything to avoid. In trying to help a young addict named Jordan, Lance ends up with a new born baby in the back seat of his sister's car. The car that he "borrowed" in order to try to get Jordan- the baby's mom- back to rehab. A series of misunderstandings follow, resulting in Lance ending up in juvenile detention, accused of kid-napping, and Barbara, in the unenviable position of navigating the System. She needs help, and so she calls on her (more than dear) friend, Kent Harlan, a detective whom we met in Book One...

Vicious Cycle is an eye-opener, and unless you have had the misfortune to somehow have had a relationship with someone who has been there, maybe even yourself, or worked in some capacity that gave you access to the insanity of drugs and its offspring- every crime imaginable- you may wonder if these events were so far fetched as to render them over the top. I wish that were the case. But Terri Blackstock has been involved in jail ministry and, as I found out in the first book, which you don't have to read in order to understand this one, her daughter suffer(ed) from drug addiction. Terri writes her suspense thrillers from a personal, experiential place with compassion and hope. Always pointing toward Jesus as the author and finisher of our faith.

The Caregiver by Shelly Shepard Gray

I have enjoyed Shelly Shepard Gray's writing for some time, and was happy for the opportunity to read her newest book- The Caregiver. While I always expect a great story, written with Shelly's signature warmth and Amish style; I wasn't expecting a story about a spousal abuse victim, especially not an Amish abuse victim. I know that the Amish are a peace loving people, but Shelly reminds us that no matter what the outward appearance, humans are a fallen species- sinners in need of a Saviour. She tackles themes along the lines of, "If God is good, why does He allow such awful things to happen in this world?" (The character Lucy was brutally abused by her husband.) and "If God is love, how come I can't feel it through the pain and suffering of a physical illness such as breast cancer?". (The character, Mattie is fighting for her life.)

Whether it's the loneliness of a bad marriage, or physical pain, depression can hover like a stealth bomber, just waiting to encompass it's victims. But, is this a book about abuse, depression, cancer and despair? Although those are some of the challenges facing the characters; this book is about hope. Life affirming hope that overcomes, is victorious, and conquers the darkness with the gentle light of love.

This story takes place in the Spring, and although it starts out in a storm, the sun comes out to warm the earth, and our hearts as we are encouraged by the quiet strength of Lucy, the abuse survivor, and Mattie, the feisty young woman battling breast cancer.

Sometimes the caregivers need someone to take care of them.

This is book one in the Families of Honor series. This is Shelly's best writing yet.

A Book Most Worthy

I have been known to gush shamelessly over Siri Mitchell's books; and her new one, A Heart Most Worthy is most gush-worthy. It is the story of three young Italian women from different backgrounds, discovering life and love in 1918 America.

Siri took a risk in writing the in the omniscient point of view, to my great delight. I really enjoy being included (often with a wink and a smile) in the narrative, as if perhaps I would know the right thing to do in the situations in which our heroines find themselves. Sadly, I tend to learn more from hindsight, myself.

I have always been a push over for stories which include fabric, beading, embroidery, and working in shops. Just add some forbidden love, and lost fortunes- which force young women to use their talents to create gowns for wealthy, undeserving clients and you will have me in your power until the last words are spoken.

Ms.Mitchell also recreates the streets of Boston, and the Italian families residing there with authenticity and grace. I grew up an Irish Catholic in Massachusetts, and I found myself smiling at Siri's depiction of the close knit Italians, whom I envied for their large family celebrations, warmth of heart and hearth, and the food... oh the food!

Every time period has its challenges, plagues and the like. Through it all, God's love and kindness reigns.

Hearts Aglow by Tracie Peterson

In the past week I was blessed to read not one, but two awesome books, written by authors who happen to be great FRIENDS! The first was Judith Millers' A Bond Never Broken, and now, I'm delighted to share my thoughts about Hearts Aglow by Tracie Peterson.

Hearts Aglow is book two in Tracie's Striking a Match series. Set in Texas in 1886, Hearts Aglow chronicles the lives of a Philadelphia family, the Vandermarks', who are trying to survive the intense Texas weather, a difficult industry (logging), the aftermath of the Civil War and its horrible residue of prejudice, villains who want to put them out of business, vendettas of all kinds, and some nosey townspeople. Not to mention the desires of their own hearts- to find true and lasting love. This family has lots of love to give; and the forces that rise up against them are great.

This is mainly Deborah's story. Her desire is to become a doctor. In a time when women professionals, especially young and single ones, were rare-to non-existent, obstacles abound. But does that stop her? Absolutely not! In fact, she is apprenticing with the handsome Dr. Christopher Clayton, who clearly has a thing for her, but is he worthy enough to be her man? Well, he is very humble, and God fearing; but unfortunately he has a secret, which leads to complications.

Tracie Peterson writes great Christian fiction. The Christian theme expressed in this book seemed to be"hearing from God". How can a person know God's will? Wonderful question, and Ms.Peterson didn't shy away from using scripture to back up her characters' faith journey. I found myself talking to God right along with the Vandermarks as they tried to view their lives in the light of God's Word.

This book was well researched and beautifully crafted. It was easy for me to see why Tracie has been so successful in her writing journey! (80 books published so far!!!)

A Bond Never Broken, introduces us to the Amana Colonies, Iowa cira 1917. Amana is a tiny dot on the map, really. The Amanans who settled the area were a peace loving and God fearing people who just wanted to live their faith and be left alone.

Enter the Great War: World War I. Distrust of anything German prompts the forming of committees dedicated to flushing out anything that smacks of anti-american sentiment. Their mission: to weed out traitors- both real and perceived. That included people who spoke German as a first language. It didn't matter that the Amana lifestyle was about as anti violence as Mother Theresa. (I am endlessly amazed that it's so much more in our human nature to hunt the sheep than go after the wolves.)

Sorry for digressing, but this was all news to me- until I read A Bond Never Broken. Judith Miller writes history and fiction with relevance and warmth. I was drawn to the (two) heroines' stories, and wanted their lives to end happily ever after. I don't know how Judith Miller told this story with such heart, when it could have taken a major Hitchcockian turn... Is that a term?

I learned a lot from this one, and was even prompted to follow up with some research of my own... ah, the wonders of google...

Really good story. Lovely, seamless writing... not just another "bonnet novel". ( I really detest that term.)

I grew up in a book-loving home. Actually, that’s not entirely accurate. My mom loves books. My dad loves to read the first chapters of books and then make us all listen as he recites his favorite passages. I, however, enjoy reading books in their entirety and came into writing as a result of book-love. After earning two fancy degrees in education and Spanish, I promptly let the thinking part of my brain take a breather and instead became pregnant. In addition to writing books to make my friends laugh and cry, I observe the chaos at the home I share with my unfailingly supportive husband and three offspring. We’re doing our best and so far, no one’s been to prison.

Promises to Keep by Ann Tatlock

What can I say about Promises to Keep?

Well, first of all, the character Roz is going up in my fiction hall of fame as one of the most honest characters ever! I loved her eleven year old voice. Clear and observant. Not so much a child of the sixties, but a young girl living in the time period of social upheaval, as the happenings in her life reflect the turmoil of the era.

What I loved about her is the grace and hope that she exhibits in spite all evidence to the contrary. Her father is an abuser, and yet she still loves him and sees the good in him. She hopes for the best, though the odds that he will change are not good.

It is a story about dreams. Dreams that include her father's love and being a family restored.

In the end, this book is about the Father's love, the yearnings that we all have, to experience unconditional love and security. It's about the small moments and desires of the heart, and finding that one in a million best friend, who just happens to share the same dream. And the faith that wins out- even if it's not the kind of winning we would have expected. As I found out, Ann Tatlock does not write the expected.

What she does is get you thinking. Am I living the small moments in my life to the fullest? The baby's smile, the teenager's droll sense of humor, the family sitting around the table... the sunset?

Well, upon finishing Larkspur Cove, I have to agree. I've been reading Christian fiction with an open heart lately. I am asking the questions, who are the characters, and what do their stories have to teach me?

I won't ruin any surprises, and there are many in this book. But here's something that I'm carrying away from my visit to Moses Lake. God is there, even when I cannot see Him. Even when I'm facing obstacles unique to my own life, and He will lead me where I need to go.

The characters of Larkspur Cove needed to get to the place where they could come to terms with happenings beyond their control, happenings filled with regrets, loss and uncertainty. The book is about their journey:

Andrea Henderson's carefully constructed life blows up in her face when her husband, a Christian college administrator leaves her and their teen-aged son for another woman.

Mart McClendon must deal with the death of beloved family members whom he feels personally responsible. If only he had done things differently.

Who is the little mystery girl?

Angel Harp by Michael Phillips

I am smack dab in the middle of Angel Harp as I write this and I am thoroughly absorbed in a wonderful journey of epiphanies and revelations.

Phillips' style is a bit reminiscent of Daphne DuMuarier's Rebecca, not a bad thing at all, written flawlessly in the first person. The reader is drawn into the life of Marie Buchan, a widow who realizes that her life is passing by and she's in a rut, a somewhat pleasant rut, but a rut none-the-less. She decides to take a trip to Scotland where she and her dead husband had always wanted to travel, but never did.

Michael Phillips weaves a story replete with mystery and history. Cliffs and castles. Music and theology. Tea and scones.

If you have any prior love of or fascination with Scotland and long for a brilliant yarn -the story kind- although there are some sheep that act as minor characters, please do yourself a favor and get this book.

Oh, please excuse me, I really must be getting back... I have a date with a duke, or is it the curate? Maybe I'll just play my harp by the cliff overlooking the sea... Danger? What danger???

The Girl in the Gatehouse is set in the Regency period, which is the era of Jane Austen. The story echoes plots and themes that Jane Austen used in her published works. I caught wind of everything from Pride and Prejudice, to Northanger Abbey to Mansfield Park whose character, Maria Bertram, Julie informs us, was the inspiration for Mariah, her heroine.

Jane Austen's work has been described as "brushstrokes on ivory" light layers of color and innuendo on the pure substance of ivory, representing perhaps, the social structure and manners of the time. Julie Klassen's characters may echo Jane's, almost as if she laid a transparency of Austen's books over a bright light, but then she turns on a switch to make them come to life in a new and original way. Julie creates characters with depth, style and meaning all their own.

I loved the plot twists and surprises nestled into this gem of a book. Ms. Klassen began each chapter with a cool quote, giving a snippet of insight into the period and wisdom of the day.

Now that the hols are officially over and done. What next? There are so many things I would love to try. Painting. Writing. Crocheting. I promised my sister a scarf... for Christmas!!! The problem is, I can use every creative endeavor as a procrastination device. For example, if I have a book review due, suddenly I simply must take the dog for a walk. Or clean. Or crochet. Or watch the remaining Falalala Lifetime movies in my recorded uverse area (to make room for more recordings).

A friend suggested that I write things down, so that I have a visual of what I would like to accomplish. It can be simple, like cleaning out the sink, or more ambitious- write four pages- not going to happen but I can dream...

Okay, Pearl, let's go for a walk...

Emily of Deep Valley by Maude Hart Lovelace

Well, somehow in my childhood reading, Maude Hart Lovelace's books failed to appear. I used to worry that there were books out there that I wouldn't discover before I died (I was a bit morbid as a child). But now, I am happy to say, that Harper Perrenial Modern Classics is re-releasing the Deep Valley books just for me. Or those like me whose town library was a bit short on the must- reads for young ladies. And of course the generations of young readers to come who will delight in Maude's loveable characters and heart felt stories.

Emily of Deep Valley is Maude Hart Lovelace's first young adult stand-alone novel.

It follows the Betsy-Tacy novels which take place in the same town of Deep Valley, Minnesota. The books are based on the author's child-hood experiences and friends in Mankato, Minnesota.

There is a lovely forward by Mitali Perkins which sets the mood of the story and end notes afterward which give readers who are hungry for more some more tid-bits to ponder as you plan which book by this wonderful author to read next.

Christmas is coming and I highly recommend anything by Maude Hart Lovelace as gifts for those special women in your life.

A word from Mitali: Who In The World Is Mitali Perkins?

That's a good question. I've been trying to figure it out myself, spending most of my life crossing borders.

I was born Mitali Bose in Kolkata (Calcutta), India, and always tried to live up to my name—which means “friendly” in the Bangla language. I had to! Because my family moved so much, it was the only way I could make new friends.

By the time I was 11, I'd lived in Ghana, Cameroon, London, New York and Mexico before settling in California just in time for middle school. Yep, I was the new kid again, in seventh grade, the year everybody barely makes it through.

My biggest lifeline during those early years was story. Books were my rock, my stability, my safe place as I navigated the border between California suburbia and the Bengali culture of my traditional home.
